In a bid to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of citizens' rights, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to officers across the nation regarding unlawful and incessant detentions.
In a statement released today, IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the Nigerian Police Force is committed to respecting and enforcing citizens' constitutional rights, including the right to personal liberty, and will not tolerate actions that violate these fundamental freedoms.
The warning follows growing concerns about the rise in cases of arbitrary arrests and unlawful detentions across various parts of Nigeria. Many citizens have expressed frustration over being held beyond the legally stipulated time without due process, a situation that has raised alarm among human rights organizations and the general public.
IGP Egbetokun reiterated that, under the Nigerian Constitution, any arrest or detention must be based on a lawful order and should not exceed the time limits set by law without a formal charge. He stressed that police officers must act within the confines of the law, ensuring that all detainees are granted access to legal representation and that they are not subjected to inhumane treatment or unlawful detention.
“The Nigerian Police Force is tasked with ensuring the safety and security of every Nigerian citizen, but this mandate must always be executed with respect for human rights,” said IGP Egbetokun. “We must uphold the law and act with integrity. Any officer found guilty of engaging in unlawful detentions will face disciplinary action in accordance with the police code of conduct and applicable laws.”
The IGP also called for greater public awareness of citizens’ rights and encouraged members of the public to report any instances of unlawful detention or police misconduct. The Nigerian Police Force is working to ensure that all officers are properly trained on the constitutional rights of citizens and on best practices for handling arrests and detentions.
