A joint security operation involving the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes has successfully rescued a priest who was abducted by armed kidnappers in Anambra State. The priest, who was taken from his residence on the evening of March 20, 2025, was rescued unharmed after a coordinated effort by the security agencies.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of March 23, was prompted by intelligence gathered from the community and extensive tracking efforts by security forces. The abductors, believed to have been operating in the area for several weeks, were confronted in a forested area on the outskirts of the state capital, Awka.
Speaking on the successful rescue operation, Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, Chijioke Okafor, praised the swift response of the security forces, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the police, the army, and local security groups in tackling rising security challenges.
"The quick and efficient rescue of the priest is a testament to the dedication of our security agencies and the strength of our collective efforts. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all residents of Anambra, and we will continue to intensify our operations to rid the state of criminal elements," Commissioner Okafor said.
The rescued priest, who is currently in the care of medical personnel, expressed gratitude to the security teams and the community for their support during the harrowing ordeal.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting any suspicious activities, as they work towards maintaining peace and security in the region. Efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the criminal gang are ongoing.
