The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a landmark achievement in its poverty alleviation efforts, revealing that it has disbursed ₦419 billion through the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme to nearly six million vulnerable Nigerians nationwide. In a continued push to support low-income households, an additional ₦54 billion will be distributed to 2.2 million beneficiaries before the end of August.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, during a televised interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to lifting Nigerians out of poverty through structured and transparent interventions.

“In the next few days to come, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households,” said Dr. Sununu. “So far, we have disbursed ₦419 billion to five million Nigerians. This is a rapid conditional cash transfer designed to provide immediate relief to the most vulnerable.”

The beneficiaries are selected from the National Social Register, which currently contains over 18.9 million households. The National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) is responsible for identifying and verifying recipients based on their socioeconomic status.

Dr. Sununu also addressed concerns about past inefficiencies, noting that improved digital identity systems have enhanced the accuracy and accountability of the programme. He assured Nigerians that the administration is focused on strengthening social protection mechanisms and expanding its reach to those most in need.
