The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally rejected the results of the August 16, 2025 by-elections conducted across Basawa State Constituency, Zaria Kewaye State Constituency, and the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency. The party cites widespread irregularities, intimidation, and criminal interference as reasons for its decision.
In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Sir Edward Percy Masha, the PDP condemned what it described as “gestapo-style tactics” deployed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of undermining democratic principles and orchestrating a climate of fear and manipulation during the electoral process.
“We reject the outcome of the elections in all three constituencies. The exercise fell far short of democratic standards and was marred by abduction, vote-buying, and harassment of our members,” Masha declared.
Call to Action and Next Steps
The PDP announced that it will convene with its candidates, stakeholders, and legal team to determine its next course of action, which may include legal redress and formal petitions to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Despite the setbacks, the PDP expressed deep appreciation to its supporters: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the good people of Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies for standing by the PDP. Your unwavering commitment and support will never be taken for granted,” Masha said.
A Warning Against Democratic Erosion
The party warned that continued erosion of public confidence in elections could have dire consequences for democracy in Kaduna State and Nigeria at large: “If this undemocratic trend continues, the problem of voter apathy will worsen and may reach a dangerous peak by 2027,” Masha cautioned.
