A tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) community and beyond, as a student was fatally shot in broad daylight near the campus back gate on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The attack, believed to be cult-related, underscores the alarming rise in cult violence across Lagos State.

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, had just completed his examinations when he was accosted by armed assailants. Witnesses reported that the attackers shot the student twice at close range before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim in a pool of blood. The Lagos State Police Command has since confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the incident.

This tragic event is part of a disturbing pattern of cult-related violence in Lagos. Just days earlier, a 16-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in Ebute Metta, and two men were found dead in Idimu under similarly violent circumstances.

The Lagos State Police Command has pledged to intensify efforts to combat cult-related activities and ensure the safety of residents. CSP Benjamin Hundeyin stated, “Investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.”

YABATECH spokesperson Adekunle Adams clarified that the incident occurred outside the college premises, emphasizing that the institution remains committed to maintaining a safe environment for its students.
