In a significant political development, Mr. Oluwagbenga Abiola, Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, has officially announced his withdrawal from the upcoming chairmanship race scheduled for July 12, 2025. This decision comes as a gesture of loyalty and respect towards his political mentor, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Mr. Abiola has declared his full support for Abdulganiyu Obasa, the Speaker’s son, who has been endorsed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer for the Agege council chairmanship. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Abiola emphasized that his decision was voluntary and aimed at fostering unity within the party.

“I will never go against my leader, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa. This is the man who made me,” Mr. Abiola stated. He recounted his political journey, highlighting the Speaker’s pivotal role in his career, from his appointment as Special Assistant on Media in 2015 to his current position as Vice Chairman.

Mr. Abiola dismissed speculations of coercion, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the APC and its leadership. “Yes, I aspired. Every Vice Chairman dreams of becoming Chairman. But the party has spoken, and I fully agree. Leaders and stakeholders have united, and I respect and support that,” he added.

The Vice Chairman also expressed optimism about future opportunities, stating, “I trust my leader. He knows what’s best and can recommend me for even greater responsibilities when the time is right. I’m still young and full of energy. I’ll work for the party and ensure we achieve victory.”

This announcement follows calls from key stakeholders in Agege, who urged Speaker Obasa to endorse his son for the chairmanship, citing the Speaker’s enduring contributions to the area’s political and infrastructural growth.

Mr. Abiola has instructed members of his Obasa Youth Alliance to fully support the party’s decision, pledging his dedication to the APC’s success in the forthcoming elections.
