The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the successful disbursement of ₦5.12 billion in pension arrears to 90,689 retirees across the country, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and dignity of senior citizens who served the nation.
The payment, which covers outstanding entitlements for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), was facilitated through the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD). The funds address long-standing arrears owed to pensioners from various sectors including civil service, parastatals, police, and customs.
Dr. Chioma Ejikeme, Executive Secretary of PTAD, stated: "This disbursement marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to clear inherited pension liabilities. We are proud to restore hope and financial stability to thousands of retirees who have waited patiently for their entitlements."
The Federal Government emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to reform pension administration, enhance transparency, and ensure timely payments. The move has been widely welcomed by pensioners’ unions and advocacy groups, who praised the government’s responsiveness and renewed focus on social justice.
Many retirees expressed relief and gratitude, noting that the payments would help cover medical bills, household expenses, and other pressing needs.
"This is a long-awaited lifeline. We thank the government for remembering us," said Mr. Ibrahim Musa, a retired customs officer.
