In a move that has stirred both surprise and concern across the region, the Kano State Police Command has announced the suspension of Durbar festivities during the upcoming 2025 Eid-El-Fitr celebrations, citing security concerns arising from ongoing tensions surrounding the emirship dispute in the state.
The decision, made public earlier today, was driven by fears that the traditional event, which typically involves vibrant parades, horse riding, and other cultural displays, could exacerbate existing tensions and create security challenges. With the Emir of Kano's position currently at the center of legal and political disputes, authorities have raised concerns about potential unrest during what is normally a highly attended event.
“The safety and security of Kano residents and visitors are our utmost priority,” said Kano State Police Commissioner, Bala Jibril. “Given the current sensitive political environment and the potential for unrest, the police have determined that it is in the best interest of public safety to suspend Durbar celebrations for this year’s Eid-El-Fitr festivities.”
Durbar, a centuries-old tradition that marks the end of Ramadan, is one of the most anticipated cultural events in Northern Nigeria, attracting thousands of spectators from within and outside the country. The event traditionally showcases the region’s rich history, with prominent figures, including the Emir, leading grand processions.
This year’s ban comes amid ongoing disputes surrounding the legitimacy of the current Emir, who has faced challenges from rival factions. The tension, which has spilled into the legal and political spheres, has created an atmosphere of uncertainty, particularly in Kano, which has long been a focal point of cultural and political influence in Northern Nigeria.
While many residents have expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the Durbar festivities, the police have assured the public that other forms of celebration will still be allowed, provided they comply with safety regulations and do not pose risks to the general public. Authorities have also emphasized that additional security measures will be in place during the Eid period to ensure peace and order.
The suspension of Durbar festivities has drawn reactions from both traditionalists and political figures, with some advocating for a reconsideration of the ban. However, the police remain firm in their stance, with Commissioner Jibril further stating, “We are committed to ensuring that this Eid is celebrated peacefully and safely for all. We urge everyone to cooperate with the security agencies and avoid actions that may lead to further division or violence.”
