In response to the recent suspension of U.S. foreign aid to various African nations, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a powerful statement calling for African governments to prioritize self-reliance and sustainable development. His remarks come as a reaction to the U.S. government's decision to halt critical aid programs aimed at strengthening infrastructure, healthcare, and economic initiatives across the continent.

The former president, who served as Kenya's leader from 2013 to 2022, urged African leaders to view the suspension as a "wake-up call" for the continent's future. He highlighted that while international aid has played a crucial role in addressing immediate challenges, Africa must begin to cultivate its own resources, forge stronger regional collaborations, and adopt policies that promote long-term growth.

"While we appreciate the support we've received from global partners, including the United States, Africa cannot afford to be overly dependent on foreign aid," said Kenyatta in his statement. "This suspension is an opportunity for us to rethink our strategies, reinforce local industries, and harness the potential of our youth, natural resources, and technological innovations."

Kenyatta’s remarks come at a time when multiple African nations are facing both economic and political pressures. The former president emphasized the need for leaders to refocus efforts on addressing key issues like corruption, governance, and education, which are essential to creating a stable foundation for economic progress. He also stressed the importance of diversifying African economies, moving away from over-reliance on external financial assistance, and working towards sustainable practices that can withstand global financial disruptions.

The suspension of U.S. aid, which has impacted programs in sectors like health, education, and infrastructure, has led to concerns about the future stability of key developmental initiatives across the continent. However, Kenyatta remains optimistic that Africa’s growing influence on the global stage, its wealth of resources, and a youthful population offer a pathway forward.
