The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has announced a sweeping directive prohibiting politicians and government officials from speaking on church podiums during services and religious programmes. This decision follows widespread public backlash over controversial comments made by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, during a thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja.

During the service, Wike reportedly used the pulpit to deliver politically charged remarks, including criticism of opposition figures and commentary on the 2023 elections. The incident sparked national debate over the sanctity of religious spaces and the growing trend of politicisation within worship gatherings.

In a memo signed by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Revd Dr Henry Ndukuba, the Church reaffirmed its commitment to spiritual neutrality and outlined new protocols to preserve the integrity of Christian worship.

Politicians and officials are no longer permitted to speak from the lectern or pulpit, which is consecrated for the reading of God’s Word.

Church leaders are instructed to refrain from eulogising or glorifying guests in ways that could compromise the Church’s reputation.

Any guest expected to address the congregation must first consult with church leadership to ensure non-partisan conduct.

While politicians remain welcome to attend services, the Church insists its platforms are not to be used for political messaging or propaganda.

“The Church must diligently avoid speeches, conduct, or events that may incite division or foster political bias within the body of Christ,” the memo stated, referencing Matthew 5:13–14 in reaffirming its spiritual mission to be “the light of the world and the salt of the earth.”
