The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a mass rally in response to the recent hike in telecom tariffs across the country. The rally, scheduled for February 4th, 2025, will bring together workers, consumers, and civil society organizations to protest the sharp rise in charges imposed by telecommunications providers.
The NLC, representing millions of Nigerian workers, has expressed strong opposition to the hike, which it believes will place an additional financial burden on Nigerians already grappling with rising costs of living. The union has called on both the federal government and telecommunications companies to reconsider the tariff increases, which they argue disproportionately affect low-income Nigerians who rely on affordable mobile and internet services for communication, business, and education.
"Telecommunications have become essential to everyday life in Nigeria, but this recent tariff increase is another blow to the pockets of ordinary Nigerians. This hike comes at a time when inflation is at an all-time high, and the purchasing power of Nigerians has significantly weakened," said NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero. "We are taking to the streets on February 4th to demand an immediate reversal of this decision and to stand in solidarity with the Nigerian people."
The rally is set to take place in major cities across the country, with the largest demonstration scheduled to begin at the NLC headquarters in Abuja at 10 a.m. Participants are expected to march to the National Assembly and the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy to deliver their petition.
