The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the apex student body representing millions of Nigerian youths across tertiary institutions, has issued a strong appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a joint statement signed by NANS President Comrade Isah Atiku Abubakar and Public Relations Officer Comrade Orowole Eniola, the association described Kanu’s prolonged detention as “a matter of serious concern” and emphasized the need for a political resolution to the impasse.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a national asset to the country and should be allowed to contribute his quota. His continued detention sends the wrong signal to Nigerians, particularly the youth in the South-East,” said Comrade Abubakar.

The statement, released following a strategic meeting at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, highlighted that Kanu has been granted bail on multiple occasions by courts of competent jurisdiction, yet those rulings remain unenforced. NANS stressed that this undermines public confidence in the rule of law and deepens regional tensions.

“Mr. President has a historic opportunity to heal wounds and strengthen our democracy. Releasing Kanu will not only douse tension in the South-East but also reaffirm the belief that this administration is committed to justice and fairness,” added Comrade Eniola.
