In a powerful show of support, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, has publicly endorsed Governor Alex Otti for a second term, praising his administration’s transformative achievements and declaring that “his good works have already campaigned for him.”

Speaking during a celebratory lunch held in honor of Governor Otti at the Mater Dei Cathedral in Umuahia, Bishop Ukpong commended the governor’s leadership, citing landmark infrastructure projects that have significantly improved the lives of Abia residents. Among the highlighted accomplishments were the rehabilitation of the Igwu (Omenuko) Bridge and the Arochukwu–Ohafia Road—projects once deemed impossible.

“Since I became an adult, travelling from Ohafia through Bende-Ohafia Road was a nightmare. But now, nobody is scared of the bridge again because of the work you have done there,” said Bishop Ukpong. “What I thought was impossible in the past is now possible.”

The bishop also recalled his personal experience traveling to Arochukwu earlier this year, noting the dramatic improvement in road conditions compared to his 2018 journey. He emphasized that the saying “there is no easy route to Aro” has been rendered obsolete by Governor Otti’s efforts.

“Whoever is going to contest the 2027 governorship election in Abia State is wasting their time,” Bishop Ukpong declared. “The governor has campaigned for himself already through good works.”

Governor Otti, visibly moved by the endorsement, expressed gratitude for the bishop’s words and acknowledged the vital role religious institutions played in his initial campaign.

“Leadership is all about stewardship and service,” Otti said. “Our greatest support came from the churches, and we remain committed to delivering responsible governance.”
