The Enugu State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old male suspect in connection with the tragic killing of his 5-year-old cousin following a failed attempt to extort ₦1 million from the victim’s family.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly abducted the child from their shared family compound in Enugu East Local Government Area on August 18, 2025. He then contacted the child’s parents, demanding a ransom of ₦1 million for the safe release of the boy. When the family was unable to meet the demand, the suspect reportedly took the life of the child and attempted to conceal the crime.
The body of the victim was recovered on August 20, following coordinated efforts by law enforcement officers and community members. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter and is currently in police custody, assisting with further investigations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzodinma, condemned the act as “deeply disturbing and heartbreaking,” and assured the public that justice will be pursued with urgency and diligence. “This case is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance within our communities and the importance of nurturing values that uphold the sanctity of life,” he said.
