A coalition of workers under the umbrella of the Lagos State Workers’ Advocacy Group (LSWAG) has issued a strong demand for the immediate reversal of recent salary cuts imposed on public sector employees across Lagos State.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the group expressed deep concern over what it described as "unjust and economically harmful reductions" in staff wages, citing the rising cost of living and inflation as reasons why the cuts are both “insensitive and unsustainable.” According to LSWAG, the reductions have already begun to negatively impact workers’ well-being, morale, and productivity.
“We are calling on the Lagos State Government to rescind the decision without delay,” said Adekunle Olatunji, spokesperson for the group. “The workers who keep the state functioning day and night should not be made to bear the brunt of fiscal challenges caused by poor planning or economic mismanagement.”
The group further warned that failure to reverse the cuts within a reasonable timeframe may lead to mass protests and potential industrial action. LSWAG also called for greater transparency in the state’s budgetary allocations and spending, particularly in light of the government’s continued investment in large-scale infrastructure projects.
While no official statement has yet been issued by the Lagos State Government, sources within the civil service have confirmed that reductions of up to 25% have affected thousands of employees across multiple departments.
