In a decisive breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to restore peace in Benue State, the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of several suspected gunrunners linked to recent attacks in the region. The operation also led to the recovery of a cache of ammunition and weapons believed to have been used in violent assaults that have plagued parts of the state.

The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Benue State Police Command following actionable intelligence on the movement of arms through rural communities. In a coordinated sting operation, law enforcement agents apprehended the suspects at a hideout near Katsina-Ala, a flashpoint in recent months due to escalating violence.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Hassan Abdulrahman, said: “This operation is part of our broader strategy to dismantle the supply chain of illegal firearms fueling the unrest in our communities. We have recovered significant rounds of live ammunition and high-powered rifles. Our suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged accordingly.”

Preliminary investigations suggest the arrested individuals may be part of a larger network responsible for arming criminal elements in the state. The police further disclosed that ongoing efforts are in motion to trace the origin of the recovered arms and apprehend any collaborators.

The operation marks a significant stride in curbing the flow of illicit weapons into volatile areas and underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police to restore safety and order across Benue.
