In a landmark move to tackle gender inequality and stimulate inclusive economic growth, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday launched the Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy Roadmap at the Shell Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan.

The newly unveiled roadmap is a comprehensive strategic framework aimed at advancing the economic rights, participation, and opportunities of women across Lagos State. Rooted in data and developed through stakeholder collaboration, the policy is designed to address systemic barriers faced by women, support female entrepreneurship, promote access to finance, and boost job creation for women across various sectors.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the critical role women play in shaping the economy and community wellbeing. “Empowering women is not just a moral imperative—it is an economic one. Our commitment through this roadmap is to ensure every woman in Lagos has a fair chance to thrive, lead, and contribute meaningfully to the future of our state,” he said.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecilia Dada, called the policy a “historic and practical blueprint” that would help dismantle long-standing barriers and ensure that women, especially those in underserved communities, are not left behind.

The launch drew high-level government officials, civil society leaders, development partners, and grassroots women leaders who praised the initiative as bold, timely, and necessary.

This new roadmap aligns with the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda, reinforcing the Lagos State Government’s commitment to gender-responsive governance and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
