Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s "Sleeping Prince," has passed away after spending 19 years in a coma following a devastating car accident. The royal family confirmed his death early Saturday morning in a statement expressing sorrow over the loss of the young prince.
The prince fell into a coma in 2005 at the age of 18 after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a car crash while studying at a military college. For nearly two decades, Prince Al-Waleed was kept alive on life support, during which time his condition became the focus of international attention and a symbol of hope, resilience, and faith for many across the Arab world.
His father, Prince Khalid bin Talal Al-Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family, remained publicly committed to his son’s care, frequently sharing updates and videos that inspired millions with glimpses of minimal movements—blinks or slight gestures—that kept hope alive among followers.
The prince’s condition occasionally stirred headlines, especially in 2021 when a video showing what appeared to be movement in response to voice commands went viral. However, doctors maintained that he remained in a persistent vegetative state with no significant change in prognosis.
In an official statement, the Royal Court said: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud. After 19 years of courageous endurance in a coma, he has returned to his Creator. We ask the Almighty to accept him in His mercy and grant him eternal peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with Prince Khalid bin Talal and the entire family during this difficult time.”
The prince will be laid to rest in Riyadh following funeral prayers at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque. Dignitaries, officials, and members of the public are expected to attend the burial ceremony, paying respects to the young royal whose medical ordeal touched many hearts.
Social media platforms across the region have been flooded with tributes, prayers, and expressions of sympathy. The hashtag #SleepingPrince has trended throughout the day as mourners share messages of support and remembrance.
Though Prince Al-Waleed spent most of his life out of the public eye, his story sparked widespread dialogue around medical ethics, long-term care, and hope in the face of uncertainty. His legacy will live on as a reminder of the strength of family, the power of faith, and the unwavering belief in miracles.
