In a decisive move aimed at curbing the growing wave of insecurity in the state, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has announced a 12-hour daily restriction on the operations of commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists, effective immediately.
The directive, which was issued following a high-level security meeting held at the Government House in Minna, restricts all motorcycle (okada) and tricycle (keke) movements from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM across the state.
Governor Bago cited intelligence reports linking criminal activities such as banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery to the use of these vehicles during night hours. "This is a tough but necessary step to restore order, protect lives, and create a safer environment for all Nigerlites," he stated.
The ban is part of a broader set of emergency security measures being introduced by the state government in collaboration with security agencies. Governor Bago reassured citizens that the state is working closely with law enforcement to ensure compliance and maintain peace.
While acknowledging the economic implications for riders and commuters, the governor appealed for public understanding, emphasizing that the security of lives and property must take precedence.
He further directed local government chairmen and traditional rulers to work in synergy with security agencies to ensure the successful implementation of the new order and to support ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts.
