A coalition of leading civic organisations has thrown its weight behind renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), in his call for the immediate removal of the Rivers State Administrator, Desmond Ibas. The groups are demanding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu act swiftly to restore democratic governance and accountability in Rivers State.
In a joint statement issued today, the coalition, comprising over a dozen pro-democracy and civil rights groups, described Ibas' continued stay in office as a “blatant affront to constitutional order” and a “threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.”
“We commend Mr. Falana for his courage in speaking out against the illegality perpetuated in Rivers State. The tenure of an unelected administrator in a democratic system is not only unconstitutional but dangerous,” the statement read.
Civic groups allege that Ibas’ appointment, following months of political infighting and disputed legislative actions, has bypassed electoral processes and undermined local governance. They insist that President Tinubu must intervene decisively by removing Ibas and initiating the process for a legitimate, democratic transition.
They further warned that failure to act could result in widespread civil unrest and deepen citizens’ distrust in government institutions.
“This is not just a Rivers State issue. It is a national test of our commitment to the rule of law,” said Dr. Ngozi Bello, spokesperson for the Centre for Democratic Reform, one of the signatories to the statement.
