In a remarkable gesture celebrating academic excellence, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has awarded a cash gift of ₦10 million to Miss Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session. The announcement was made during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo campus.
Miss Nwosu, a graduate of the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, achieved an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93, earning her the prestigious recognition. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Nwosu for her exceptional academic performance and urged other students to emulate her dedication and excellence.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the critical role of education in societal development, stating, “Education is the backbone of our society. We must foster a culture that values knowledge and innovation just as much as success in entertainment, fashion, or sports.” He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering students in state-owned institutions through strategic investments in infrastructure and welfare.
The convocation ceremony also celebrated the achievements of 11,917 graduates across various faculties and departments. Distinguished individuals, including Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd) and Otunba Olufemi Pedro, were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees for their contributions to national development.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, lauded the Lagos State Government for its unwavering support, highlighting the university’s recent accomplishments, including the accreditation of 43 out of 44 academic programs. She described the convocation as a celebration of years of hard work and a launchpad into a future filled with opportunities.
