The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, under the late leadership of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has reiterated its position on the 2023 presidential election, defending its support for Labour Party candidate Mr. Peter Obi. The group emphasized that its decision was based on a principled stance for equity, justice, and the need for national unity.

Speaking at a memorial symposium held in honor of the late Pa Adebanjo, who passed away earlier this year, prominent Afenifere leaders reaffirmed the organization's belief that the South-East region deserved a fair shot at the presidency in 2023, having been historically marginalized in Nigeria's power rotation arrangements.

“Afenifere’s support for Peter Obi was not just about politics—it was about principle,” said Chief Supo Shonibare, a senior Afenifere chieftain. “Under Pa Adebanjo’s guidance, we made it clear that justice demands every region in Nigeria be given a sense of belonging. The South-East had not produced a president in the democratic era, and it was time to correct that imbalance.”

The group dismissed criticisms that its position went against regional interests, noting that the move was consistent with Afenifere’s longstanding advocacy for restructuring, fairness, and true federalism.

“Pa Adebanjo was a man of integrity who always stood on the side of justice, even when it was unpopular,” said Princess Morenike Atinuke, another leading voice in the organization. “Supporting Peter Obi was in line with the founding philosophy of Afenifere: to ensure that no region or ethnic group is left behind in Nigeria’s democratic journey.”
