Former First Lady Michelle Obama is offering clarity and personal reflection on her decision not to attend the 2017 inauguration of Donald J. Trump as President of the United States. In light of renewed public interest and speculation, Mrs. Obama shares the emotional and principled reasons behind her absence that day.
“In the weeks following the 2016 election, our nation was not only grappling with a historic political shift, but many were also wrestling with fear, confusion, and uncertainty—including myself,” said Mrs. Obama. “My decision not to attend the inauguration was not made lightly. It was deeply personal, grounded in what I felt was an honest expression of my conscience and emotional truth at that time.”
The former First Lady emphasized that the transition of power is a cornerstone of American democracy, and she has always respected that process. However, she points to the divisive rhetoric and behavior surrounding the 2016 campaign as contributing factors to her emotional state and her ultimate decision.
“I was honest about how I felt: disappointed, hurt, and concerned. I couldn’t pretend that everything felt normal, because to me—and to so many others—it didn’t. I chose to honor my feelings in that moment, just as I’ve always encouraged others to do,” Mrs. Obama added.
In subsequent years, Mrs. Obama has continued to be a vocal advocate for unity, civic engagement, and the health of American democracy, working across political and cultural lines to empower young leaders and underserved communities.
