President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was notably absent at the burial of his elder brother, Alhaji Rafiu Tinubu, held earlier this week in Iragbiji, Osun State, sparking a wave of public curiosity and quiet speculation. A reliable family source has disclosed that the President, though deeply affected by the loss, chose to stay away from the funeral ceremony to avoid drawing attention and raising suspicions amidst the current political climate.

According to the source, President Tinubu delegated his nephew, former Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola, to attend the burial on his behalf. Oyetola, who has long-standing familial and political ties with the Tinubu family, was said to have delivered the President’s condolences and played a prominent role during the solemn rites.

“The President was very emotional about the passing of his brother, but given the atmosphere in the country right now, his presence might have escalated things or shifted the focus away from the funeral,” the source stated. “He didn’t want undue attention or misinterpretations at a time when the family was mourning. That’s why Oyetola stood in for him.”

The late Alhaji Rafiu Tinubu, a respected figure within the family and the community, was buried in accordance with Islamic rites in his hometown, surrounded by relatives, community leaders, and well-wishers. His death is said to have deeply impacted President Tinubu, who had maintained a close relationship with him throughout the years.

While the President’s absence drew commentary from some quarters, others have expressed understanding, noting the immense pressures and scrutiny that come with his position. Nonetheless, the appearance of Oyetola at the burial was seen as a significant gesture that reaffirmed the family's unity and continued adherence to cultural traditions.
