In a powerful Easter message that has resonated across the nation, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent action to alleviate the suffering of millions of Nigerians burdened by economic hardship, insecurity, and despair.

Speaking during his annual Easter homily, Bishop Kukah drew upon the symbolism of the resurrection of Christ to highlight the need for renewal, hope, and decisive leadership. “Mr. President, Nigerians are in pain. Our people are being crucified daily by hunger, poverty, and fear. We need leadership that can bring our people down from this cross,” he stated solemnly.

Bishop Kukah’s message, known for its moral clarity and fearless critique of power, addressed the stark realities facing Nigeria. He cited worsening inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and a deepening sense of hopelessness among the youth. “The resurrection story is one of victory over pain and despair. But for many Nigerians, there is yet no Easter morning. We are still stuck in Good Friday,” he said.

The cleric, renowned for his role in promoting dialogue and national unity, called on the Tinubu administration to act swiftly and with compassion. “Leadership is not about power, it is about service. The government must prioritize policies that uplift the poor, restore trust in institutions, and provide security for all,” he urged.

This year’s Easter message comes amid increasing economic challenges, with citizens facing surging food prices, fuel scarcity, and an unstable currency. Bishop Kukah’s call adds to the growing chorus of voices urging urgent reforms and accountability from the federal government.
