The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that the death toll from the tragic building collapse in Ojodu Berger has risen to five. Rescue operations are ongoing, with 15 individuals successfully rescued from the debris.
The three-storey building, located at 10 Oremeta Street, Ojodu Berger, collapsed on Saturday morning, trapping several occupants beneath the rubble. Among the deceased are three females and two males, all adults. The rescued individuals, including restaurant staff and customers, have received pre-hospital care and are being closely monitored.
Emergency responders, including personnel from LASEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other first responders, have been working tirelessly to reach ground zero of the collapsed structure. The rescue teams are committed to ensuring that any remaining individuals trapped are safely recovered.
The building, which housed a popular eatery, was reportedly undergoing construction work at the time of the collapse. Preliminary investigations suggest that unapproved structural modifications may have contributed to the incident. Authorities have cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue efforts and ensure public safety.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, stated, "Our teams remain on-site, working around the clock to rescue survivors and recover victims. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of this tragedy."
