In a dramatic escalation of tensions within the Lagos State House of Assembly, the recently sacked Assembly Clerk, Mr. Ganiyu Onafeko, has issued a formal warning to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, over alleged defiance of a court order. Onafeko, who was removed from his position as Clerk earlier this month, claims that Speaker Obasa is in direct violation of a court ruling that reinstated him to his former role.
According to Onafeko’s legal representatives, a Lagos High Court issued an order on February 20, 2025, directing the immediate reinstatement of Mr. Onafeko to his position, pending the outcome of an ongoing legal dispute. However, sources close to the Assembly suggest that Speaker Obasa has disregarded the court's directive, further heightening the controversy.
In a statement issued to the press, Onafeko’s legal team has warned that unless the Speaker adheres to the court's decision and restores him to his duties, they will pursue contempt of court charges against Speaker Obasa. "The court’s order is clear and unambiguous," the statement reads. "Any continued refusal to comply is an affront to the rule of law and will not be tolerated. We are prepared to take all necessary legal steps to hold the Speaker accountable."
Onafeko's removal as Clerk had sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the legality of the decision. He had served in the position for several years and was regarded as a key figure in the functioning of the Lagos Assembly. His legal battle to return to office has garnered considerable attention, with political observers and legal experts alike calling for the matter to be resolved swiftly.
