As communities across Kano grapple with ongoing water shortages, newly released financial reports indicate that the state government allocated N247 million to refreshments and entertainment expenses in the first quarter of 2025—an amount significantly higher than its spending on critical water infrastructure improvements.

The revelation has sparked widespread debate among residents and advocacy groups, who argue that pressing investments in water supply systems should take precedence over discretionary expenditures. Kano, one of Nigeria’s largest cities, has been facing increased challenges in providing consistent access to clean water, with many areas experiencing dry taps and residents relying on costly alternatives such as water vendors.

"We are deeply concerned that while our people suffer from water scarcity, millions are being spent elsewhere,” a local community leader. “Water is not a luxury—it is a necessity. We urge the government to refocus its priorities to ensure adequate infrastructure and sustainable solutions.”

According to analysts, the discrepancy in funding highlights broader concerns over budget allocation, transparency, and governance. Government representatives have yet to issue an official statement clarifying the rationale behind the spending choices.
