In a bold move aimed at promoting long-term economic sustainability and reducing dependency, the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, has announced a reduction in palliative aid allocations and a shift towards investing in agricultural development to empower local farmers and communities.

The decision was made following a series of consultations with agricultural experts, community leaders, and key stakeholders, with the goal of creating sustainable economic opportunities for Borno’s citizens. Governor Zulum emphasized that while emergency palliative support has played a vital role in the short term, it is time to focus on building the capacity of farmers and creating a self-sustaining agricultural economy.

Governor Zulum’s new policy aims to channel resources previously allocated to palliative programs into modernizing farming techniques, improving access to quality seeds and fertilizers, expanding irrigation systems, and providing training for farmers on effective crop production. Additionally, the state government will prioritize the construction of storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses and improve market access for local produce.

"By investing in farming and agriculture, we are empowering our people to feed themselves, create jobs, and contribute to the overall development of the state," Governor Zulum stated in his address to the public. "This is a move toward self-reliance, where we not only alleviate immediate hardship but also ensure that future generations benefit from sustainable livelihoods."

The governor's office also highlighted that the state will be collaborating with federal agricultural agencies and private sector partners to enhance the reach and effectiveness of these initiatives. Plans are already underway to introduce agro-businesses and market linkages to help farmers sell their produce efficiently.

This new approach is part of the broader vision to transform Borno State into an agricultural hub, create jobs, and significantly reduce poverty. Governor Zulum expressed his belief that with the right support and resources, Borno’s agricultural sector has the potential to be a major driver of economic growth and stability.
