In a shocking statement that has sent ripples across the political landscape of Kaduna State, former Governor Nasir El-Rufai declared that his relationship with current Governor Uba Sani has soured, following the ongoing investigation into alleged misappropriation of a staggering ₦423 billion in public funds during the former's tenure.
The statement, made public earlier today, marks a sharp break between the two leaders, who were once close allies in the state's political and governance structures. El-Rufai's remarks come amidst mounting pressure on Sani, who is under scrutiny for his role in the state's financial management following the investigation.
In his address, El-Rufai explained that he could no longer maintain a friendship with Sani due to differences in handling the probe and the public's concerns about transparency and accountability in the administration. He emphasized that, while he remains supportive of robust investigations into financial mismanagement, the manner in which the matter has been politicized has led him to sever ties with the sitting governor.
"I have always advocated for good governance and transparency in our state. The actions surrounding the ongoing ₦423 billion probe, and the way it has been used to undermine the integrity of my administration, have made it impossible for me to remain friends with Governor Uba Sani. He has chosen a different path, and I cannot be associated with that direction," El-Rufai said in a press statement.
The former governor, who served from 2015 to 2023, also expressed disappointment at the use of the investigation as a political tool, accusing some factions within the state government of orchestrating the probe for personal gain. He called for an independent and thorough examination of the financial records, free from political interference.
Governor Uba Sani has yet to respond directly to El-Rufai's comments, but sources close to the governor have indicated that they are aware of the growing tension between the two political figures.
