Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has called on the South-East Governors' Forum to prioritize the development of regional railway infrastructure as a critical step towards boosting economic growth and regional integration. The Governor made the call during his address at the South-East Economic Summit, held on Saturday, February 24, 2025, in Awka.
Governor Soludo emphasized that the South-East region, as one of Nigeria's most vibrant economic hubs, has immense potential to unlock through improved connectivity, particularly in the transport sector. He stressed that the establishment and expansion of regional rail lines would not only ease the movement of goods and people but also create significant employment opportunities and foster regional cooperation.
"The South-East region has long been a leader in commerce, innovation, and culture. However, to maintain this leadership, we must invest in infrastructure that will bring us closer together and make our economy more competitive," Soludo remarked. "Developing regional rail networks will not only enhance trade but also improve access to essential services, particularly in rural and underserved areas."
The Governor noted that while the federal government’s rail projects, such as the Lagos-Kano and Abuja-Kaduna corridors, are crucial, the unique economic needs of the South-East demand a more tailored approach. He urged the South-East Governors’ Forum and the South-East Development Commission to collaborate with federal authorities to fast-track railway development within the region.
Soludo further pointed out that investing in rail infrastructure will significantly reduce traffic congestion, lower transportation costs, and contribute to a cleaner environment by reducing the reliance on road transport. He highlighted the potential benefits of regional rail for both local businesses and international trade, emphasizing the importance of improved logistics.
