In the aftermath of the ongoing crisis surrounding the Lagos State House of Assembly, three individuals arrested for allegedly assaulting operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have been granted bail following intervention by prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN.
The three suspects, who were detained earlier this week in connection with the alleged altercation with DSS personnel at the Assembly premises, had faced serious charges, including physical assault and obstruction of official duties. The incident, which unfolded during a heated exchange at the Assembly, raised concerns about the escalating political tensions in the state.
Falana, known for his tireless advocacy on behalf of human rights and the rule of law, intervened on behalf of the accused, urging the authorities to review the situation impartially and in line with due process. Following his intervention, the accused were granted bail, and the matter is expected to proceed through the legal channels.
Falana’s legal team emphasized that while respecting the rule of law, the actions of the arrested individuals should be examined in light of the broader context of political unrest, which has fueled significant disagreements within the Lagos State Assembly. It is also noteworthy that no major injuries have been reported as a result of the confrontation, though the incident continues to attract significant public attention.
In a statement released through his office, Falana reaffirmed his commitment to defending the constitutional rights of Nigerians, regardless of political affiliations, and called for calm and restraint from all parties involved.
"This incident underscores the need for accountability and transparent handling of political matters. While the law must be upheld, we must ensure that justice is served without prejudice," said Falana.
The Lagos State Assembly has been at the center of political discord following a series of contentious legislative activities, and this latest development adds to the volatile atmosphere surrounding the state's political environment.
