Nigerian authorities have apprehended a Thai woman at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after discovering boxes containing illegal drugs in her possession. The arrest took place on February 22, 2025, when customs officers and narcotics enforcement agents intercepted a suspicious shipment that the woman was attempting to smuggle into the country.
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending investigation, was carrying multiple boxes labeled as personal items. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the boxes contained large quantities of illicit narcotics, including cocaine and heroin. Preliminary estimates suggest that the drugs seized have a street value of millions of dollars.
Nigerian authorities have confirmed that the woman was traveling with a valid visa and had arrived from an international flight, but her behavior raised red flags with the airport security team. Following a thorough search, customs officers discovered the hidden drugs, and the woman was immediately arrested and taken into custody for further questioning.
"We remain committed to safeguarding the country from the menace of illegal drugs," said a spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). "This arrest underscores our ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and ensure that dangerous substances do not enter Nigeria."
The Thai national is currently facing charges of drug trafficking, which carry severe penalties under Nigerian law. The NDLEA, along with international law enforcement partners, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case and possible connections to larger drug trafficking syndicates.
