In a decisive move to bolster security across the South-West region of Nigeria, governors from the Southern states have convened to enhance their collaborative efforts against the rising threats posed by the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP). This initiative comes in response to alarming reports of ISWAP's infiltration into southern territories, particularly following recent attacks and growing intelligence on the group's operational capabilities.

During a series of meetings held over the past week, the governors have committed to establishing a more integrated security framework that will involve local government councils and community leaders. This strategy aims to improve intelligence sharing and response mechanisms at all levels of governance.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "We are witnessing an influx of bandits and insurgents fleeing military operations in the North-West into our communities. It is imperative that we act swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety of our citizens." He emphasized that local collaboration is essential to address this security emergency effectively.

The governors are also engaging with security agencies, including military and police forces, to enhance surveillance and operational readiness. Recent arrests made by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Osun State, where ten suspected ISWAP members were detained, underscore the necessity of heightened vigilance and proactive measures across the region.

In addition to military collaboration, community-based initiatives are being prioritized. The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has offered its support to assist in combating the threat posed by insurgents establishing camps in forested areas. Their President, Wasiu Afolabi, stated, "We are prepared to confront these foreign invaders with all necessary resources. We urge our governors to provide us with the necessary support to act decisively."
