The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted a significant shipment of cannabis concealed in a duvet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The illicit drugs, weighing over 20 kilograms, were destined for the United Kingdom and were seized during a routine inspection at the airport's cargo terminal.

The operation, which took place on January 25, 2025, led to the arrest of two individuals involved in the trafficking of the narcotics. The suspects, whose identities are being withheld pending further investigations, attempted to smuggle the drugs by hiding them inside a seemingly innocuous duvet. The drugs, carefully packed in vacuum-sealed bags, were detected through the use of advanced security screening technology, which alerted customs officers to the unusual contents.

In a statement released by the NDLEA, the agency commended the vigilance and professionalism of its officers in thwarting the illegal drug trade. "This operation underscores our continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring that illegal substances do not make their way into the international market," said Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesperson.

The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face charges related to drug trafficking and other associated offenses. The NDLEA has also vowed to continue its efforts in securing Nigeria's borders and airspace against the illegal drug trade, working in close collaboration with international law enforcement agencies.
