In a tragic incident that underscores the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, nine personnel of the Nigerian armed forces have been confirmed killed following an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State. Additionally, five soldiers remain unaccounted for after the attack, which occurred while the troops were returning from a mission to assist with the burial of victims of a recent terrorist attack.

The ambush took place on Tuesday as the soldiers were returning from Dumba, located east of the Lake Chad basin. According to military sources, the troops were engaged in a gun battle with the terrorists who opened fire on them during their return journey. Initial reports indicate that seven soldiers died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries later at a medical facility.

A soldier who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the troops had responded to a distress call to provide security for villagers burying 40 farmers recently murdered by Boko Haram. This mission highlights the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis faced by communities in Borno State, where terrorist attacks have become increasingly frequent.

The Nigerian Army has acknowledged the attack and is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding it. Major Edward Buba, a spokesperson for the military, confirmed that operations in the area have faced significant challenges and emphasized that further details will be released as they become available
