In a significant operation, officials from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have been observed unloading large quantities of smuggled rice from the Benin Republic at the Ogun Modern Market, a facility constructed by Senator Yayi. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating rice smuggling across Nigeria's porous borders.

The operation comes amid rising concerns over the impact of smuggled rice on local agriculture and the economy. Despite efforts by the Nigerian government to bolster domestic rice production and reduce reliance on imports, smuggling remains rampant due to insufficient border controls and high demand for cheaper rice options. Reports indicate that smugglers continue to exploit weaknesses in enforcement, with customs officials allegedly colluding with them to facilitate illegal activities.

The Ogun 1 Area Command recently reported intercepting 21 trucks loaded with smuggled rice valued at over N98 million in early 2023. This seizure underscores the persistent issue of rice smuggling, which not only undermines local farmers but also affects government revenues and food security.

Traders and local communities have expressed frustration over these developments, as they struggle to compete with the influx of cheaper, smuggled rice. Many are calling for more stringent measures to protect local producers and ensure fair market conditions.
