In a bold move aimed at addressing concerns about illegal and irregular revenue collection practices within the state, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Mr. Okpebholo, has announced the immediate suspension of all revenue collection activities by state agencies. The suspension comes as part of a broader initiative to reform the revenue generation system and ensure accountability in the collection of public funds.

Governor Okpebholo revealed this decision during a press briefing at the Government House in Benin City. He expressed his deep concern over the proliferation of unauthorized revenue agents and fraudulent activities that have undermined the integrity of the state’s revenue system. He emphasized that the suspension would allow for a comprehensive audit of the existing revenue structures and ensure that only legitimate and properly authorized agents carry out such functions in the future.

In addition to the suspension, Governor Okpebholo directed security agencies to begin the arrest and prosecution of individuals or groups found to be defying the suspension or involved in illegal revenue collection activities. He called on the public to report any unlawful revenue practices to the relevant authorities, assuring them that the state government would take swift action against any offenders.

"This suspension is a necessary step towards sanitizing our revenue system and restoring public trust," Governor Okpebholo stated. "We are committed to implementing reforms that ensure that all revenues generated in Edo State go directly into the state's coffers for the benefit of all Edo people. We will not tolerate any form of fraud, exploitation, or illegal activity in the collection of state revenues."

The governor further outlined that once the auditing process is completed, the state would introduce a more transparent and streamlined revenue collection framework, aimed at reducing inefficiencies and making the system more accessible to all citizens.

In the meantime, the suspension remains in effect until further notice. The Governor’s office has assured citizens and businesses that the state will continue to provide necessary public services and support during this period of transition.
