A coalition of human rights advocates and civil society organizations has strongly condemned the arrest and secret trial of Hamdiya Sidi, a Sokoto woman who publicly lamented the rising insecurity and killings in the state. The group asserts that her detention is a blatant attempt by Governor Ahmad Aliyu's administration to silence dissent and intimidate those who dare to speak out against government failures.

Hamdiya Sidi was arrested over the weekend following her social media posts, where she criticized the state government for its inadequate response to the increasing violence perpetrated by armed groups in Sokoto. Reports indicate that she received threats prior to her arrest, highlighting a troubling pattern of harassment against citizens who voice concerns about public safety and governance. Amnesty International has condemned her arrest as arbitrary, citing that she was denied access to legal representation and family during her secret arraignment on Monday.

The coalition emphasizes that Hamdiya's arrest violates fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to a fair trial. Her case exemplifies the growing trend of silencing dissenting voices in Nigeria.

The group calls on Governor Aliyu to address the rampant insecurity in Sokoto rather than retaliating against citizens who highlight these issues. They demand transparency in government actions and accountability for those responsible for the ongoing violence that has plagued rural communities.

Sokoto State has witnessed a surge in violent attacks by bandits, resulting in numerous fatalities and widespread fear among residents. The coalition urges the state government to prioritize public safety over political expediency.

The coalition stands in solidarity with Hamdiya Sidi and calls for her immediate release. They urge citizens to advocate for their rights and support one another in the face of governmental oppression.
