A catastrophic explosion involving a petrol tanker in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 90 individuals, with another 50 people hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the incident. The explosion occurred late Tuesday night when the tanker, which was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, overturned near Khadija University around 11:30 p.m.

According to Shi’isu Adam, spokesperson for the Jigawa police command, the majority of the victims were gathered at the accident scene attempting to scoop spilled fuel when the explosion ignited a fierce blaze. "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy," stated Adam. "Despite repeated warnings from authorities urging people to maintain a safe distance from fuel tanker accidents, many still rushed to the scene, leading to this devastating loss of life."

The police have confirmed that a mass burial for the victims is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, those injured are receiving medical treatment at Ringim General Hospital, where their conditions are being assessed.

This incident highlights a persistent issue in Nigeria, where similar accidents have led to numerous fatalities over the years.
