In light of the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, the South East South South Professionals of Nigeria has called for a decisive intervention from the Supreme Court regarding the legitimacy of the current members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The civic group asserts that the resolution of this crisis is critical to restoring order and democratic governance in the state.
The political landscape in Rivers State has been marred by a fierce power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This conflict has resulted in a fractured House of Assembly and ongoing legal disputes that threaten to destabilize the region further. The recent ruling by the Court of Appeal, which upheld the authority of a faction led by Martin Amaewhule, has only exacerbated tensions, leading to widespread confusion over legislative legitimacy and governance.
“The Supreme Court must step in to clarify the status of the House of Assembly members,” said Hannibal Uwaifo, President of the South East South South Professionals. “The ongoing crisis poses a significant risk to law and order in Rivers State and undermines the democratic process. It is imperative that we have a clear and authoritative ruling on who rightfully holds office.”
The civic group expressed concerns that without judicial clarity, the political impasse could lead to increased violence and disorder. They highlighted that previous attempts to resolve these issues through political maneuvering have only deepened divisions within the state’s governance structures.
In recent weeks, there have been multiple court rulings affecting local government elections and legislative authority in Rivers State. The Federal High Court had previously barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing voter registers necessary for conducting local elections, further complicating an already volatile situation. This has raised alarms among civic organizations that fear a breakdown of democratic processes.
“The people of Rivers State deserve elected representatives who can effectively govern and address their needs,” Uwaifo added. “We urge all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and work towards a peaceful resolution. The Supreme Court’s involvement is not just necessary; it is vital for restoring faith in our democratic institutions.”
As tensions continue to rise, the South East South South Professionals call on both state and federal authorities to prioritize dialogue over conflict and ensure that democratic principles are upheld in Rivers State.
