The Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Mr. Jelili Sulaimon, over allegations of negligence and misconduct. The decision was made during a plenary session held on Monday, October 7, 2024.
The suspension follows a series of investigations by the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, chaired by Hon. Sanni Okanlawon. The committee’s findings revealed that Mr. Sulaimon had repeatedly failed to comply with the Assembly’s directives and was involved in financial mismanagement and other acts of misconduct.
Hon. Okanlawon highlighted that the investigation was prompted by an incident in April 2024, where chaos erupted in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Alimosho, leading to the death of a resident, Mr. Micheal Ajayi. The committee’s report indicated that Mr. Sulaimon’s actions contributed to the unrest and that he had shown a defiant attitude towards the legislative body’s efforts to address the issue.
The Assembly’s resolution mandates that the Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, immediately assume the role of acting chairman. The management of the council, including the manager and treasurer, has been instructed to support Mr. Johnson in his new role to ensure the smooth running of the council’s affairs.
Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, supported the motion for suspension, emphasizing the need for accountability and adherence to governance protocols. “The suspension of Mr. Sulaimon serves as a warning to other local government chairmen to follow due process and maintain integrity in their operations,” said Hon. Adams.
The Lagos State House of Assembly remains committed to upholding the principles of good governance and ensuring that public officials are held accountable for their actions.
