In a significant move to improve the welfare of civil servants, Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State has approved a new minimum wage of ₦72,500 for workers in the state. This decision takes immediate effect and includes a one-year tax relief on the approved sum.
The announcement was made on Monday, October 7, 2024, following the submission of the report by the Kogi State Minimum Wage Implementation Committee, headed by the State Head of Service, Elijah Avenemi. Governor Ododo expressed his commitment to enhancing the living standards of all cadres of workers in the state.
“This new minimum wage is a testament to our dedication to the welfare of our workers. We understand the economic challenges faced by our civil servants, and this increment is aimed at providing them with the necessary support to cope with the current economic situation,” said Governor Ododo.
The Governor also highlighted his background as a former labor leader and civil servant, emphasizing his empathy and understanding of the workers’ plight. “Having been in their shoes, I am committed to ensuring that our workers receive their due entitlements promptly and fairly,” he added.
The Chairman of the Minimum Wage Committee, Mr. Elijah Avenemi, praised the Governor for his proactive approach and support throughout the process. “This agreement is a victory for the workers of Kogi State. It reflects the Governor’s genuine concern for their well-being and his commitment to good governance,” Avenemi stated.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in Kogi State, Comrade Gabriel Amari, also commended the Governor’s efforts, describing him as the most worker-friendly governor the state has ever had. He assured the Governor of the workers’ continued dedication and support.
The new minimum wage is ₦2,500 higher than the recently approved federal minimum wage of ₦70,000, showcasing Kogi State’s commitment to leading by example in the welfare of its workforce.
