Today marks a historic milestone as Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest living person, celebrates her 116th birthday in the quiet village of Lightwater, Surrey. Born on August 21, 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Ethel is now the last surviving subject of King Edward VII and one of only a handful of people in history to reach this extraordinary age.

Ethel assumed the title of the world’s oldest living person in April 2025 following the passing of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canbarro Lucas. Her life spans over a century of global transformation—from two world wars and the moon landing to the digital age and the reign of six British monarchs.

Ethel chose to spend her birthday “at her own pace,” surrounded by loved ones in her care home. Though she declined interviews, her care home released a heartfelt statement: “Ethel and her family are so grateful for all the kind messages and interest shown to her as she celebrates her 116th birthday this year. She prefers to enjoy the day quietly with her family.”

Ethel received a birthday card from King Charles III for her 115th birthday. This year, her caregivers hinted that a call from the King might be her only exception to a media-free day.

Ethel traveled alone to India to work as an au pair, later marrying British Army officer Norman Caterham in 1933. The couple lived in Hong Kong and Gibraltar before settling in Surrey, where Ethel has lived for over 50 years. Her legacy includes three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
