Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic fifth AfroBasket championship win.

D’Tigress made history on Saturday by clinching their fifth African title—and fourth consecutive crown—after a resounding victory over Senegal in the finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament held in Kigali, Rwanda. The feat firmly cements Nigeria’s place as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.

In a statement released on Sunday, Obi praised the team for their resilience, discipline, and unwavering dedication to national pride.

“D’Tigress have once again demonstrated the Nigerian spirit of excellence, unity, and determination. Their triumph is not just a victory on the court, but a powerful message of hope and inspiration to millions of Nigerians, especially our young girls,” Obi said.

He further commended the players, coaching staff, and Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for their commitment to growing the sport despite prevailing economic and infrastructural challenges.

“This victory is a testament to what our sportsmen and women can achieve when given the right support. It is my hope that this accomplishment will spur renewed investment in sports development and youth empowerment across Nigeria,” Obi added.

Obi emphasized the need for sports to be a unifying tool in Nigeria and called on the government and private sector to increase funding for grassroots sports development, talent discovery, and adequate welfare for athletes.
