In a development that has sparked widespread concern across Ondo State, Deputy Governor Chief Olayide Owolabi Adelami has reportedly been denied access to the official deputy governor’s residence by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration, allegedly due to internal political tensions and fears of a power struggle.
Since assuming office in February 2024, Adelami has been forced to lodge in multiple hotels across Akure, including areas such as Ijapo and Alagbaka. Despite the existence of a renovated VIP lodge within the Government House, sources confirm that the deputy governor has not been permitted to move in.
Reports indicate that the Ondo State government has spent over ₦130 million on hotel accommodations for Adelami and his aides within a single year. Critics argue that these funds could have been better allocated to critical sectors such as education and healthcare.
The controversy comes amid growing speculation about the influence of key figures within the administration. Commissioner for Finance, Mrs. Omowunmi Isaac, is alleged to wield disproportionate power over the governor, with opposition parties calling for her dismissal over claims of financial misconduct and undue influence.
Despite the internal discord, the Court of Appeal recently upheld the election of Governor Aiyedatiwa and Deputy Governor Adelami, dismissing multiple appeals from opposition parties and affirming the legitimacy of their mandate.
Upon his swearing-in, Governor Aiyedatiwa had urged Adelami to uphold transparency and accountability, while expressing confidence in his deputy’s ability to contribute fresh ideas to the administration. Adelami pledged loyalty and commitment to the government’s vision.
