A torrential downpour that swept across Yobe State in the early hours of Thursday has triggered severe flooding in Potiskum, submerging dozens of buildings and displacing hundreds of residents. The unprecedented rainfall, which lasted for several hours, overwhelmed drainage systems and caused widespread destruction in residential and commercial areas.

Initial assessments by local authorities indicate that several neighborhoods in Potiskum, including Anguwan Doya, Mamudo Road, and parts of Sabon Layi, were hardest hit. Homes, schools, and small businesses were inundated, with many structures suffering extensive water damage. Eyewitnesses report that floodwaters rose rapidly, leaving residents with little time to salvage belongings.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) has deployed rescue teams to assist affected families and coordinate relief efforts. Temporary shelters have been set up at designated safe zones, including Potiskum Central Primary School and the Local Government Secretariat. Medical personnel are also on ground to provide first aid and prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Speaking on the incident, YOSEMA Director-General, Alhaji Musa Garba, stated: “This is one of the most severe floods we’ve seen in recent years. Our teams are working round the clock to provide relief and assess the full scale of the damage. We urge residents to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories.”

The Yobe State Government has called on the Federal Government, humanitarian organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to support ongoing relief efforts. Authorities are also emphasizing the urgent need for improved urban drainage infrastructure and climate-resilient planning to mitigate future disasters.
