Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, arrived in Abuja to a rousing hero’s welcome today following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship. The team, who clinched an unprecedented sixth continental title, was received by jubilant fans, government officials, and sports enthusiasts at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport before proceeding to the Presidential Villa.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted the triumphant squad at Aso Rock, where he lauded their resilience, teamwork, and championship spirit. The President described their win as “a shining symbol of national unity and Nigerian excellence on the global stage.”
“D’Tigress have shown the world that Nigerian women are second to none in talent, grit, and determination. You’ve made us all proud,” President Tinubu stated. “Your victory is not just about basketball — it’s about breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation.”
Also present at the reception were Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, and top Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) officials, who joined the President in celebrating the team's exceptional achievement.
Team captain Ezinne Kalu, speaking on behalf of the players, thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support and dedicated the win to “every girl with a dream.” She also called for increased investment in women’s sports in Nigeria.
The President assured the team of continued government support and announced that the federal government would honour D’Tigress with national awards and financial incentives in recognition of their contribution to national pride and sports development.
D’Tigress’ victory further solidifies Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball, having now won five consecutive AfroBasket championships — a feat unmatched in the tournament’s history.
