The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced voting in the highly anticipated by-election for the Edo Central Senatorial District today, August 16, 2025. This pivotal election follows the elevation of Senator Monday Okpebholo to the governorship, leaving the senatorial seat vacant.
Nine political parties are contesting for the seat, with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) emerging as the leading contenders. The Labour Party (LP) is notably absent from the ballot, having been disqualified by INEC for failing to conduct a valid primary.
This by-election is widely viewed as a litmus test for Governor Okpebholo’s political influence in his home district and a preview of the 2027 general elections. The governor has been actively involved in the campaign, with APC rallies drawing massive crowds across the district.
INEC has assured voters of a transparent and credible process. The Coalition of Observer Groups has also called for neutrality from security agencies and urged all stakeholders to uphold the Electoral Act.
Security agencies have been deployed across the five local government areas of Edo Central to ensure peaceful conduct. INEC officials are stationed at polling units, and observers are monitoring proceedings to safeguard the integrity of the vote.
