The nation mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished statesmen, Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, who passed away peacefully today at the age of 78.
A statement released by the Ogbeh family confirmed his death, describing him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose legacy of integrity, service, and patriotism left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political and agricultural landscape.
Born on July 28, 1947, in Otukpo, Benue State, Chief Ogbeh’s career spanned decades of public service. He served as Minister of Communications and later Minister of Steel Development during the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari. He later became National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005, and was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari.
Throughout his tenure, Ogbeh championed agricultural reforms, promoted food security, and advocated for rural development. His initiatives, including the export of local produce like purple hibiscus (zobo leaves), generated millions in revenue and revitalized Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and requested privacy during this period of mourning. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set,” the family stated.
